Screen Social itself was born out of a long-running desire to combine our biggest passions – film, music and people. Cinema can be a solitary experience and with it, amazing, fulfilling & life-changing – immersing yourself in that moment, living the on-screen journey. On the flip-side it can also be inclusive, the glue that binds friendships together, a common ground, a love, a shared experience… to some, a religion. If you’re one of these people, you’ll know what cinema means to you.
Screen Social is about talking, drinking, great content, nice DJs, live scores, live bands & coming away feeling different about something. We’re not only talking film, but music videos, animation, experiments, motion design and other stuff we haven’t thought of yet. We want to bring those communities together in one place, screening content that’s new, different and maybe unexpected.
The best thing about it? Getting to know all those hard-working directors, animators, designers, actors, producers and crew who put so much of their passion on screen. We salute you.
The Charity Angle
All proceeds from the door from Screen Social 1 & 2 went towards the Marathon Film fund for cancer charities Team Continuum and Cancer Research UK. Adam Bennett (the @marathonfilm Man) ran the NY marathon for Team Continuum & Cancer Research UK in November 2011 and we thought it might be nice to raise some money for Adam’s cause. Screen Social seemed like the perfect fit.
In February 2012 we held a ‘Van Aid’ special which was aimed at raising much needed funds for our mobile film festival ‘Cannes in a Van’. It was a great success, but sadly our target is a long way off if we are to keep the festival alive.
Cannes in a Van – ‘The four-wheel film festival’
Cannes in a Van is ‘the smallest mobile film festival in the world’. It’s a platform for independent film right in the heart of the biggest and most glamorous – The Cannes Film Festival. We screen submitted films during the 10 days or so the festival is running, right on the Croisette, straight from our trusty Ford Transit van. If you have a film to enter, be sure to keep an eye on our Twitter feed @cannesinavan so you know when we open. It’ll be soon.
We will also be hosting the Van d’Or Awards for independent film. Every British Film entered is eligible for these awards and we’re expecting some great coverage this year.
Submissions to Screen Social
If you have a film, music video, animation or anything else you’d like to screen at a future event, go to the submissions section.
It is a real ‘open-source’ event, taking many forms at different venues, so if you have any suggestions for future events including live acts, films or directors to showcase, we’d be glad to hear from you!
